Designing the board nonprofits need now

San Francisco | June 8, 2026 | AWS Builder Loft and Okta HQ

Boards need to change—not incrementally, structurally. A third of US nonprofits lost government funding in the first half of 2025. Individual donors have declined every year since 2019. AI is accelerating every one of these pressures. Boards are the only body in an organization with the authority to authorize the transformation this moment demands. Most aren’t ready to do it, but boards that don’t adapt will be managing decline, not transformation.

Okta, AWS, and Board.Dev are convening leaders across three cities—San Francisco, New York, Chicago—to design the board nonprofits need now. After each city, we’ll deliver a brief on findings; after the series, we’ll publish a signature blueprint on where leaders agreed, where they diverged, and what the field should do now.

SF is the first stop.

THE SIGNATURE BLUEPRINT

Together, we’ll build the definitive field document on how nonprofit boards are actually making AI decisions right now: what’s working, what’s breaking, and what the sector needs to do next. We’ll produce a city dispatch after each salon; at the series completion, a signature blueprint pulls together what leaders across three cities agreed on, where they diverged, and what the field should do now. Distributed through Board.Dev’s network of 1,000+ nonprofits, funders, and tech leaders, plus field partners across philanthropy, tech, and nonprofit sectors.
